The 21-year-old Relebohile Mofokeng breathed new life into his aspirations for a spot in Bafana Bafana’s squad ahead of the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) later this month.
On Saturday, he reignited his season with a dazzling display that not only earned him his first Player of the Match award but also significantly boosted his national team prospects. The talented winger played a pivotal role in Orlando Pirates’ 2-0 victory over Durban City at Moses Mabhida Stadium, a result that propelled the club to the top of the Betway Premiership standings.
Mofokeng, who had struggled with form earlier in the season, left observers pondering his AFCON place despite being included in coach Hugo Broos’ preliminary squad last week. However, he proved his mettle with an inspiring performance that came just in time for both club and country.
His resurgence in form at such a crucial moment has sparked renewed hope among supporters who see him as a vital asset to the national team. The tournament kicks off next month, and Mofokeng will likely be among the nine or ten Pirates players on the final 23-man roster.
He assisted Evidence Makgopa’s opening goal in the 23rd minute, demonstrating great awareness and vision as he delivered a pinpoint cross that allowed Makgopa to finish effortlessly. The young attacker’s involvement did not end there; he was instrumental in the buildup to Orlando’s second goal in the 77th minute, setting the stage for Patrick Maswanganyi’s clinching strike.
After securing the Player of the Match honours, Mofokeng reflected on his performance:
“I’ve been doing it since training, I try to enjoy football, so yes, I think we just (Pirates) keep on going,” he said.
He attributed his success to teamwork, highlighting Makgopa’s excellent positioning that allowed him to make the assist.
“I think, when he scores, we also score as a team,” he added, underscoring a collective ethos that resonates with fans and teammates alike.
National team coach Broos has previously identified the winger’s potential as a key creative force, emphasising his ability to deliver under pressure — the kind of resilience needed for a tournament of such stature.
The young talent’s ability to bounce back from a difficult period could not have come at a better time for both Orlando Pirates and Bafana Bafana, as hopes soar for a successful AFCON campaign.
Looking ahead, Mofokeng and the Pirates will aim to build on this momentum as they prepare for the Carling Knockout Final against Marumo Gallants this coming Saturday, where he will undoubtedly hope to replicate his recent form.
