In testing times, only the brave prevail — those willing to face challenges head-on and find solutions to navigate difficult situations. For Stellenbosch FC, now in unfamiliar territory, Steve Barker will be hoping for exactly that.
Sitting second from bottom with just two wins from 12 matches is a position few would have predicted. While it's not quite doom and gloom just yet, urgent changes are needed, and they need to come quickly. Barker faces a tense period ahead, as the international break is followed by a short phase of action before the season pauses again for the Africa Cup of Nations.
With four matches remaining before the year ends — two in the league and two in the CAF Confederations Cup — Barker will rely on his key players to provide resistance and help get the team back on track.
Their performances will be central not only to achieving positive results in the immediate term, but also to setting a tone for the remainder of the season and building belief across the team.
Here are a few key players who can help the team get back on track.

The 24-year-old recently became the youngest player in club history to reach 150 appearances for Stellenbosch FC. His experience will be invaluable, offering leadership on the pitch and helping to guide younger teammates through this challenging period.
Titus has played a central role in Stellies’ recent achievements, including winning the Carling Knockout title in 2023, reaching consecutive MTN8 finals, and helping the team reach the CAF Confederations Cup semi-finals last season. Barker will be relying on him to step up once more during this critical phase of the campaign.

The Bafana Bafana international is one of Stellies’ most experienced players. Like Titus, Moloisane has consistently been involved in high-pressure matches, including playing a key role in last season’s third-place league finish, which secured the team’s place in this season’s continental competition.
With 16 CAF Confederations Cup appearances and approaching 100 Betway Premiership matches, Moloisane’s leadership — particularly at the back — will be crucial. With 15 goals already conceded in the league in 12 matches, stabilising the defense is a priority, and his presence could prove decisive in helping the team regain momentum.

Young striker Ashley Cupido has earned the trust of Bafana Bafana coach Hugo Broos, with multiple call-ups to the national team setup. While he is yet to hit the rhythm required to lead the frontline consistently, the faith shown in him by both national and club coaches is a vote of confidence he must repay.
Injuries have hindered his season, and while he has yet to score in eight league appearances and one continental match — though playing limited minutes — Cupido could still deliver the breakthrough Stellenbosch so urgently needs. With the team having scored just seven goals in the league so far, his contributions will be crucial if Stellies are to mount a stronger challenge and climb the table.
