Stellenbosch FC’s inconsistency has been a defining theme of their season so far, and as they prepare for another crucial Betway Premiership clash against Siwelele FC at the Athlone Stadium, they once again find themselves in a must-win situation.
Their troubles deepened after a 2-0 defeat to TS Galaxy in their previous league outing — their sixth loss in just eleven matches.
While much of their struggles are understandable—particularly for coach Steve Barker, who faces the challenge of rebuilding his squad with new players each season—the football gods remain unforgiving, and right now, they seem on course to deliver a harsh punishment.
Past success counts for little in the present, and unless Stellies rediscover their rhythm soon, they could find themselves in the same predicament that befell their neighbours, Cape Town City, before their relegation.
Like City, there was always a belief that a turnaround would come, but the hole only sank deeper, and with no rope long enough to pull them out, they were left reaching for the light — trapped in the depths of the lower ranks, still chasing the dream of return.
Though the season is still in its early stages, the need for consistency has become increasingly urgent. Having already exited both the Carling Knockout and MTN8 competitions, Stellenbosch cannot afford further setbacks. Continued inconsistency in the league could also have a damaging impact on their CAF Confederation Cup campaign, making the next few fixtures critical in their bid to rebuild momentum and confidence.
They will, however, take some encouragement from the fact that their opponents have also struggled for results and are yet to register a win on the road this season.
Stellenbosch’s last home performance serves as another source of optimism. In that game, they produced their most impressive win of the season — a thrilling 4-3 victory over Manqoba Mngqithi’s Golden Arrows, a side that has proven a tough challenge for many in recent weeks.
That encounter offered plenty of positives, particularly their rediscovered scoring touch, which had been a concern earlier in the campaign. Not only did Stellies net four goals, but new signing Muzomuhle Khanyi opened his account for the club, while key player Andre de Jong bagged a brace on the night.
Barker will again look to the experience of De Jong and the likes of Sanele Barns to guide his youthful side through what is shaping up to be a demanding season. With several youngsters still adjusting to the demands of juggling league football and continental competition, leadership from the senior players will be crucial.
Just two points separate 14th-placed Stellenbosch from Lehlohonolo Seema’s Siwelele, adding even greater importance to this encounter. A win for either side could be pivotal in their fight to climb out of the bottom half of the table.
Beyond just the City of Stellenbosch, the entire Western Cape will be watching with concern. With past provincial clubs having struggled to maintain top-flight status, Stellies now carry the region’s hopes. Barker’s men will aim for a performance that not only secures three points but also restores belief — and perhaps marks the start of their long-awaited turnaround.
