Kaizer Chiefs forward Khanyisa Mayo says the squad is in high spirits as they prepare for their Betway Premiership clash against Siwelele FC at the FNB Stadium on Wednesday (7:30pm Kickoff).

Coming off a goalless draw in the CAF Confederations Cup against Democratic Republic of Congo side AS Simba, Amakhosi will be looking to return to winning ways after a three-match winless run in the league. On-loan forward Mayo believes the team needs to push each other and move past recent challenges, including the departure of head coach Nasreddine Nabi.

“We haven’t been getting positive results but we are motivating each other every day and we compete at training to keep the spirits high because we need to win to compete,” Mayo said, during his side’s press conference in Naturena.

“We need to encourage each other despite the incidents that have been trending for the past few days. It’s in the past and we have to focus on the game that we are about to play.”

Mayo has enjoyed a promising start to his Chiefs career, opening his goal-scoring account in his first appearance of the season against Marumo Gallants.

However, his last league outing against AmaZulu (1-1) included a moment he would rather forget — stopping a goal-bound Pule Mmodi strike only to be flagged offside. He has since said the incident has been resolved, and the team is fully focused on moving forward.

Since their 3-1 loss to Sekhukhune United, the Glamour Boys have struggled to secure a league win, with back-to-back draws, including another 1-1 stalemate against Gallants.

“During half-time we spoke about it and I apologised and he (Mmodi) said to me that these things happen, it’s football." Mayo said. “I was not aware of my surroundings and it happens, and even after the game I gave Pule a call and we spoke about it, but he told me that it’s done and we need to focus on the next challenge.”
