AmaZulu head coach Arthur Zwane praised his side’s growing dominance in KwaZulu-Natal football after their 1–0 win over Durban City, highlighting the importance of home victories and fan connection.
The hard-fought triumph at Moses Mabhida Stadium lifted AmaZulu into seventh place on the Betway Premiership standings, extending their fine record against provincial rivals.
Zwane’s men beat both Golden Arrows and Richards Bay home and away last season, and their latest derby success reaffirmed their status as the leading side in the province. For Zwane, however, the result was about more than just local bragging rights — it was another step in reinforcing the club’s identity, culture, and consistency.
“In terms of the demands, all the games are the same,” Zwane said. “This wasn’t an easy game, and they planned for us thoroughly as well and tried to capitalise on our mistakes like everyone else.”
The Durban Derby proved another test of AmaZulu’s patience and tactical discipline. While Durban City matched them stride for stride for much of the contest, it was Usuthu’s experience and focus that eventually told, with Taariq Fielies’ late header sealing the points.
“With regards to KZN teams, it’s not really about that for us,” Zwane explained. “It’s about winning our home games — it’s really key if we want people to believe in us.”
Zwane, who has been vocal about rebuilding AmaZulu’s connection with their supporters, said consistent home performances were central to reviving the club’s proud tradition and drawing fans back to the stadium.
He also highlighted the importance of creating a pathway for local youngsters to rise through the ranks.
“We also want to improve our fanbase and have people come to watch us at the stadium,” he said. “The majority of the youngsters coming through now are from AmaZulu, so that’s key for the club.”
For Zwane, dominating the region is as much about pride as it is about progress.
The coach believes that asserting control over KwaZulu-Natal derbies helps build confidence and establishes AmaZulu as a consistent force in the national picture.
“It’s key that we dominate our region or province at all times,” he added. “Therefore, we go into these games wanting to claim all the points every time.”
Zwane’s message was clear — consistency at home, control in the province, and connection with fans form the pillars of AmaZulu’s long-term plan. The victory over City not only extended their dominance in KZN but also strengthened belief that Usuthu are once again becoming a team capable of competing among South Africa’s best.
