Former Bafana Bafana and AmaKhosi striker Siyabonga Nomvethe believes this Kaizer Chiefs side has the potential to compete for the biggest prizes in the local game.
Chiefs have made a decent start to their league campaign as they are in fifth spot on the log with 15 points after eight games. Crucially, they are just six points behind table toppers Mamelodi Sundowns who have played two games more.
Chiefs are also level on points with third-placed Orlando Pirates, though the Buccaneers have played just seven games.
Still, Nomvethe said there are a number of encouraging signs within the Chiefs squad at the moment.
“It’s a matter of them taking it a game at a time. They have done a lot of things right so far this season, but the players also have to look at themselves and have a chat as they are the ones that do the running on the pitch,” Nomvethe told SportsBoom.co.za.
“They need to have that chat and agree amongst themselves that they need to take the club back to where it belongs because this is a big club, and you notice with every game that they play, the supporters are always there whether they win or lose.”
Chiefs’ CAF Confederation Cup Participation: Boosting Rhythm and Competitiveness
Chiefs, through their Nedbank Cup win last season, qualified for the CAF Confederation Cup, which will also form an important part of their campaign this term.
The extra game time would be a good thing for Chiefs, believed Nomvethe.
“Their participation in the Confederation Cup is important for them because, unlike before, they don’t spend some weekends without any matches, and that helps a great deal, especially with their rhythm. The exposure to more serious games on the continent will make them more competitive when they return to league football.
“The likes of Mamelodi Sundowns have been performing consistently well because they play week in and week out, exposed to the best teams in Africa. I believe there will be a lot of improvement from last season.”
