Orlando Pirates coach Abdeslam Ouaddou says he is not chasing records but rather focused on what lies ahead, after leading his side past the Carling Knockout round of 16.
The Buccaneers have now extended their unbeaten run to eight consecutive matches in all competitions, impressively doing so without conceding a single goal.
This fine run of form comes after what was a difficult start for the Moroccan tactician, who replaced Spanish coach Jose Riveiro — a move that initially raised eyebrows given his appointment from Marumo Gallants.
After back-to-back league defeats early in his tenure, pressure began to mount on the 46-year-old. However, through self-belief and a calm approach, he has steadily won over the Pirates supporters.
The Sea Robbers booked their place in the quarter-finals of the "Beer Cup" after being knocked out at the same stage last season, when they suffered a shock 3-2 loss to eventual champions Magesi FC. This time around, they were made to dig deep for their 1-0 win over Siwelele FC at the weekend.
Their next test in the Carling KO will be a familiar one, as they face Magesi once again in the last eight. While Pirates will go into that clash as favourites, they are unlikely to underestimate their opponents. Reflecting on his early months in charge, Ouaddou admitted that he expected criticism when he first arrived, but he has turned that into motivation to prove himself.
“People can be very fast to judge others,” Ouaddou said.
“We are in a very big ecosystem in the world, and we know the business, and it’s only results that are very important. It is crucial not to have doubts about your competencies and what you bring to the African continent.
“I am a proud African, a proud ex-player, and proud to work on our continent and to bring my knowledge to the players and the club. I am happy to be sharing this moment with fans. I am not disappointed about the judgement that people had before because it pushed me to give my best for the players and the club, and that is how it should be.”
Pirates have not lifted this trophy since their historic treble-winning campaign in 2011/12. With both Mamelodi Sundowns and Kaizer Chiefs eliminated, the road to silverware looks slightly clearer, but Ouaddou insists that his focus remains on consistency and performance rather than external expectations.
The Buccaneers have already claimed the MTN8 crown this season, and while the league remains their top target, their recent form has turned them into one of the most dangerous sides in the country.
“To be honest, I am not looking for records; I did not even know,” Ouaddou said. “I just enjoyed the moment with my players, trying to give the best to the club and to get results while playing good football.
“It’s not easy sometimes because the opponent analyses you and doesn’t let you do what you want, but it’s only my good moment at this time, and that is what I am looking for. I do not go looking for records but just to do a good job for my club and players.”
