Stellenbosch FC emerged victorious against Kaizer Chiefs in a match marked by the controversial refusal of Rwandan goalkeeper Fiacre Ntwari to leave the field when summoned by his coaches in the dying moments of extra-time.

This gripping Carling Knockout clash ended with Stellenbosch winning 5-4 in a tense penalty shootout.

Having made a rare start for Chiefs, Ntwari’s act of defiance just before the shootout left fans and analysts questioning what ramifications, if any, this would have on team dynamics.

At the post-match presser, Stellenbosch coach Steve Barker offered a succinct response when asked how he would handle a similar situation.

“I don’t think a player from our club would do that,” he said, effectively closing the door on further discussions about Ntwari’s misconduct.

However, Barker took the opportunity to emphasise the values instilled within his own team.

“What we believe is the sort of values that we live by as a football team,” Barker stated, underscoring the club’s commitment to a cohesive culture.

He acknowledged the pressure surrounding the match, noting his players needed to avoid a fifth consecutive loss to the Chiefs.

“I told the players before the match, this is our opportunity,” he added.

Stellenbosch made the surprising decision to start reserve goalkeeper Oscarine Masuluke in place of regular starter Sage Stephens. Masuluke accepted being substituted just past the hour mark, allowing Stephens to enter the fray and ultimately turn the tide in Stellenbosch’s favour.

Stephens not only saved two penalties during the shootout, but also demonstrated remarkable composure by scoring one himself, validating Barker’s decision to back him.

“I’m very happy for Sage. He lives with his heart and soul for the club,” said Barker, praising his goalkeeper’s leadership and unwavering dedication. “He gives everything, every single time he has the opportunity.”

Before kick-off, Stephens had fully supported the decision to sit out initially, showcasing the strong team ethos that Barker is fostering at the club.

In a poignant moment of unity before the shootout, Barker, Stephens, and Evangelos Vellios gathered for prayer, reinforcing the bond between the players during high-pressure moments. “Prayer is powerful,” Barker remarked, as they prepared for the defining moment of the match.

With this victory, Stellenbosch FC will now face Marumo Gallants away in the quarter-finals, with both players and fans hoping that this win marks the beginning of a rejuvenated chapter in their season.
