Despite romping to a 3-0 win over Magesi FC in their Betway Premiership clash at Lucas Moripe Stadium on Sunday, Mamelodi Sundowns’ exploits were bittersweet as it seems they are dealing with a fresh Themba Zwane injury.
The win sent Sundowns back to their more accustomed top spot on the league table after six matches.
A 22nd-minute goal from Kutlwano Letlhaku and a second-half brace from Iqraam Rayners helped the champions make a statement.
However, after being introduced just after the hour mark, the distraught 36-year-old Zwane was subbed before the end of the game. Sundowns coach Miguel Cardoso explained that it looked like a new injury for the veteran midfielder.
“Let’s see what happened, as I understand from the doctor, it’s not the same thing he had before. Let’s hope it’s nothing serious,” Cardoso told SuperSport after the game.
Zwane had been out since August 16 with a thigh injury he picked up in the MTN8 final first leg against Orlando Pirates, and it was thought he was fully fit.
There will not be time to dwell on the Zwane injury though, as Sundowns travel to play Marumo Gallants on Wednesday before hosting Durban City on Saturday.
The busy schedule was simply part of the game, Cardoso said.
“We play in half of the week. We have a match in half of the week still, but the schedule is what it is, and people need to understand until the end of the month we have seven, six matches to play, and we can do it the right way, or not the right way, then we can be penalised.”
