Stellenbosch FC have once again had to navigate the tricky task of integrating new players into their squad, following the departure of some familiar faces seeking greener pastures.

The club has increasingly become a talent hub, with South Africa’s big three often targeting their best players over recent seasons, and many of the country’s top talents emerging from the Winelands outfit.

This consistent production of talent is a clear compliment to Stellenbosch’s development system, which continues to nurture young prospects into professional-ready players.

While rebuilding is never as simple as it seems, Steve Barker has grown accustomed to the challenge. Once again this season, the 57-year-old coach has had to reset his squad and introduce fresh faces following the loss of key players.

Despite the transitions, Stellenbosch have always managed to maintain a degree of consistency, proving the depth of their recruitment and coaching structure.

Fawaaz Basadien and Sihle Nduli are the latest to move on, joining direct rivals Mamelodi Sundowns and Orlando Pirates, respectively. Their departures have not left the squad weakened, as Barker has brought in several new signings to bolster the team ahead of a busy campaign.

It has been a challenging start to the season for Barker and his charges, but the Fifa international break comes at the perfect time for the club to regroup ahead of a high-stakes MTN8 final against Pirates at Mbombela Stadium on September 13—a match that is already confirmed as sold out.

The Stellies boss has been particularly pleased with how the newcomers have settled into the squad and adapted to his systems.

“I think they have fitted in really well,” Barker said.

“It’s clear to see that Henri Stanic is a quality defender, and he is going to give us presence and experience from Europe.

“A player like (Mthetheleli) Mthiyane has shown in a short space of time that he is a good natural number six that will add a lot of value.”

Stellies were also quick to secure former Hungry Lions striker Muzomuhle Khanyi, who ended last season as the First Division’s top scorer with 18 goals.

“Others like Muzomuhle Khanyi haven’t had a run of games, but I can see in training that he is really special,” Barker continued.

“We are looking forward to Siviwe (Nkwali) getting his opportunities; they are going on an Under-20 camp, and his chances will come as he has shown a lot of promise.

“Eventually we also got the work permit for our left-back Turan (Munafov), and he will be available for the final and going forward.”

With the squad competing in multiple competitions throughout the season, including their involvement in the CAF Confederations Cup, Barker has been particularly pleased with the depth that the new arrivals give to the club.

He believes their integration will be crucial in ensuring the team performs consistently across all fronts.

“Mokobodi showed in the 15 minutes (of his first game for the club) that he is a really smart footballer. They have integrated well, and we are looking to everyone playing a big role over the season. It’s going to be a lot of matches, so I am sure that everyone will play a key role in the season.”
