Mbombela Stadium in Mpumalanga has been named as the venue that will host next month’s MTN8 final between Orlando Pirates and Stellenbosch FC.
This will be the first time the final will be held in the province since 2016, where the now defunct Bidvest Wits beat the mighty Mamelodi Sundowns 3-2.
The match will also be a rematch of last year’s final, where Pirates earned a controversial 3-1 win at Moses Mabhida in Durban to lift the trophy for a third straight season.
Pirates reached the decider after overcoming Mamelodi Sundowns on penalties in last weekend’s semi-final second leg. After the two-legged tie ended 2-2 on aggregate, Sipho Chaine produced some heroics in the penalty shootout to win 4-1 and send the men in black and white to the final.
For Stellenbosch, The 13 September final will be a shot at redemption after they went down in Durban last year.
Last weekend, they were held to a 1-all draw by Sekhukhune. But their 2-0 victory in the first leg meant that result was good enough to see them advance.
Living up to the tournament’s “Wafa Wafa” slogan, the winner will walk away with a whopping R10 million, while the other seven teams who took part in the competition will each get R1 million.
A win for Pirates will see them move within one of Kaizer Chiefs’ record of 15 MTN8 titles won. Amakhosi won their last MTN8 in 2014. Since then, Pirates have won it four times.
Further details regarding kick-off times, ticket pricing, and broadcast details will be announced closer to the final.
