Soweto giants Kaizer Chiefs on Tuesday announced the return of Lebohang Maboe on a free tranfer.

Mabie joins Chiefs after he was released by Mamelodi Sundowns at the end of last season. He had spent the season on loan at SuperSport United.

The 30-year-old came through the youth ranks at Amakhosi, but never played for the first team. He made a name for himself at Mbombela United before moving to Maritzburg United in 2016, and Sundowns two years later.

It was at Sundowns where he made a name for himself, and even earned 17 international caps with Bafana Bafana.

“Maboe, who was part of the Club’s youth development academy during his teenage years, returns to Naturena after stints with SuperSport United, Mamelodi Sundowns, and Maritzburg United,” Kaizer Chiefs said in a statement on Tuesday.

“Over the course of his distinguished career in the Premier Soccer League, he has collected several trophies and accolades,” the club continued.

Maboe, the 10th signing during the current transfer window, will bring a wealth of experience to a young Chiefs outfit that’s desperate for leadership, especially in attacking situations, and Chiefs’ sporting director Kaizer Motaung Jr acknowledged his important he would be, especially in continental competition.

“His expertise will be crucial for us in both the domestic league and the CAF Confederation Cup. We’re pleased to welcome him back to Amakhosi. He was here and knows the culture and what our supporters expect from our players,” said Motaung.

During this window, Kaizer Chiefs have already signed Nkanyiso Shinga, Flavio Silve, Ethan Chislett, Paseka Mako, Thabiso Monyane, Siphesihle Ndlovu, Asanele Velebayi, Etiosa Ighodaro, and Luke Baartman as they look to return to the glory days.

The new season has begun well for the club, and they currently occupy second place in the league after three wins in as many games. They face their biggest test of the campaign on Wednesday when they host perennial champions Sundowns.
