Durban City head coach Gavin Hunt has praised his team’s fighting spirit after a strong start to their Betway Premiership campaign, but stressed the importance of quickly refocusing ahead of their first home match under the new club identity.
The Citizens began life as Durban City in the top flight with a statement 2-0 victory over TS Galaxy on the road last Sunday, immediately sending a message that the newly rebranded side are ready to compete among South Africa’s elite.
“It was not easy,” Hunt reflected, after the match. “We started well and were on the front foot a couple of times.
"They had a good 10-minute spell before half-time, but as an away team, we played really well. We had chances and did not take them, then we scored just after half-time, and they tried to come back, but we got the second goal.”
The win in Mpumalanga was a perfect way for Durban City to start their season, especially considering the pressure that often accompanies a rebranding and the arrival of new players. Hunt acknowledged the challenges but praised his players for their composure under pressure and their willingness to stick to the game plan.
“It’s a great feeling to get three points away from home, but we know the league is very competitive,” he said.
“We’ve got to move on now. We have a game on Wednesday, so there’s not much time.”
That game will be Durban City’s first home fixture in the Betway Premiership since the club’s rebranding, taking on Chippa United at Chatsworth Stadium. The occasion carries added significance for both the players and the fans, as it marks a new chapter for a club with a rich history under its former name, Maritzburg United.
The fixture against Chippa United is set to be a fascinating tactical battle. Chippa showed resilience in their opening match, holding Mamelodi Sundowns to a draw, which will give them confidence heading into the encounter. Known for their defensive organisation and quick counter-attacks, Chippa will certainly test City’s defensive solidity and transitional play.
Hunt will need his team to balance the excitement of the occasion with focus and discipline. The new-look Durban City squad boasts a blend of experienced players and exciting young talents, and harnessing that energy will be crucial.
The coach will be relying on his leadership group and key performers to set the tone early in the match.
The fans in Chatsworth are expected to turn out in numbers to support their team as they embark on this fresh era. The atmosphere promises to be electric, providing a morale boost that could lift the players and spur them on to a second consecutive victory.
While the win against TS Galaxy provided a strong foundation, Hunt is aware that consistency will be the key to success in the weeks and months ahead. For now, all eyes are on Chatsworth Stadium on Wednesday as Durban City seek to make their mark on home soil and continue their promising start.
