Durban City will finally get their taste of top-flight football when they kick off their maiden Betway Premiership campaign against TS Galaxy at the Mbombela Stadium on Sunday at 3pm.

The newly-promoted KwaZulu-Natal outfit earned their place among South Africa’s elite after a strong 2024/25 campaign in the Motsepe Foundation Championship, and now coach Gavin Hunt’s men will look to prove they belong at this level.

City come into the season brimming with confidence after an impressive pre-season run that included victories over Milford FC and AmaZulu.

Hunt has spoken openly about the excitement of the challenge ahead, especially in a province where competition for football fans’ attention is fierce.

“Anytime you go to a new team, it gives you a new lease of life. You fall in love with the game again,” Hunt said this week.

“Sometimes you fall out of love with the game when things happen like it happened. But it is what it is. The league is very competitive. Anybody can beat anybody. But there are obviously one or two teams that are better. That’s going to be the challenge.”

Their opening assignment, however, will not be straightforward. TS Galaxy — nicknamed the Rockets — may have suffered a 3-2 defeat to Sekhukhune United in the MTN 8 quarterfinals last Saturday at the Peter Mokaba Stadium, but they remain one of the most tactically disciplined sides in the league under new coach Adnan Beganović.

The Rockets have also been active in the transfer market, with nine new arrivals reported.

Among them is experienced striker Sedwyn George, a proven finisher in South African football.

Known for his clever movement and sharp instincts inside the box, George’s presence is expected to bring leadership and composure to Galaxy’s attack.

Durban City will lean heavily on the quality and experience of Haashim Domingo, one of their standout signings ahead of their PSL debut.

The former Mamelodi Sundowns and Cape Town City midfielder brings creativity, vision and a goal threat from midfield.

Capable of operating between the lines and unlocking stubborn defences, Domingo’s influence could prove decisive in breaking down Galaxy’s well-drilled backline.

The match promises a fascinating clash of styles — Galaxy’s established PSL nous against City’s fresh energy and momentum from promotion.

For Hunt, it will be about ensuring his side adapts quickly to the tempo and intensity of the league.

Three points on the opening day would not only signal City’s intent but also ease any early nerves about life in the big league.

For Galaxy, the aim will be to shake off their MTN 8 disappointment and spoil the party for the league’s newcomers.
