Camaraderie and team spirit will stand Bafana Bafana in good stead when they begin their African Nations Championship (CHAN) campaign against Algeria in Kampala on Friday.
Former AmaZulu full-back Wayde Jooste, one of several seasoned journeymen currently ‘free agents’ in the South African squad, believes their time spent in camp has significantly contributed to building a strong team spirit. This, he says, will boost the team's ability to perform as a cohesive and unified unit.
“I don’t think it’s been that tough to become a unified group. The majority of us have played against each other in the league, and some of us have been teammates at different clubs,” said Jooste.
“We’ve become a little family because, like I said, we’ve been together in camp in South Africa, and now that we’re in Uganda, the bond among us is just growing stronger.”
Jooste is optimistic about their chances, highlighting the advantage of being perceived as an “unknown quantity” by their opponents.
“It’s a very good thing that we’re an unknown quantity because they won’t know what to expect from us. It will count in our favour and be an advantage for us going into the group stages,” Jooste explained.
“In any tournament format, you want to start well. You don’t want to be playing catch-up and relying on other results.”
Securing three points in their opening game against Algeria would not only relieve early pressure but could significantly boost their chances of progressing further in the tournament.
Algeria made a commanding start to their campaign with a clinical 3-0 Group C victory over co-hosts Uganda at a packed Nelson Mandela National Stadium in Kampala on Monday evening.
Jooste acknowledged the strength of the Algerian team. “They deserve to be here. They're a good team. The guys saw them in action against Uganda,” he said, adding that awareness of their tactics could well be the difference between victory and defeat.
This candid assessment underscores the respect Bafana Bafana hold for their opponents as they prepare to compete in Group C, which also includes Uganda, Niger, and Guinea.
Currently based in Kampala for the group stages, Bafana Bafana are determined to make their mark and seek success against formidable opposition.
