Given that it was the first piece of silverware the club earned in a decade, Kaizer Chiefs have every right to keep celebrating their Nedbank Cup final victory, almost two weeks later.
Chiefs beat fellow Soweto Giants Orlando Pirates 2-1 in the trophy match at Moses Mabhida Stadium, in Durban, on 10 May.
It’s still been another poor season, as it will come down to the last match of their Betway Premiership campaign this weekend to determine if they will finish in the top eight.
Chiefs midfielder George Matlou, though, made sure to cherish the massive win as he was captured on social media still donning his match kit as he was out and about almost many days after the match.
“It was a great feeling for me, so I had to express my feelings, of course,” said the 26-year-old George Matlou.
“It’s been one of those achievements that I was looking for as a player personally, so winning a cup with a brand like Kaizer Chiefs is one major achievement for me and for the club as well.”
“It has been a while since winning a cup, so there were talks that 10 [years without a trophy] blah blah blah. But yes, I’m one player that is in the history books that I have won a trophy for the club [part of the generation that ended the drought].”
Last season Chiefs ended 10th in the table, and this term in the league they are ninth heading into their final game.
If they do indeed manage to finish inside the top eight, it would be a massive achievement considering their struggles.
