Rulani Mokwena and Wydad Casablanca smoked a peace pipe on Wednesday as the club confirmed that the coach had left with immediate effect.
Mokwena joined Wydad ahead of the season after being sacked by Sundowns, and big things were expected by the fans of one of Moroccan football’s biggest clubs. However, things did not go as planned and the club were out of the title race by the halfway point of the campaign.
After a string of poor results, the coach was placed on special leave as the club decided what to do. Earlier reports had suggested he would be leaving at the end of the season anyway, but issues with his payout lingered.
But now, the matter has now been resolved, and the club have announced Mokwena’s departure.
As I say goodbye, I carry unforgettable memories from Wydad, a club that will forever remain in my heart,” Mokwena said, graciously.
“I wish the team, staff, and fans tremendous success in the new season and the Club World Cup. May you continue to make history and inspire us all. Dima Wydad.”
Mokwena is now free to speak to Orlando Pirates, who are on the hunt for a new head coach since the departure of Jose Riveiro. According to reports, Mokwena has emerged as the favourite to succeed the Spaniard.
The 38-year-old previously worked for the Sea Robbers as an assistant coach, but his connection to the club goes back to before he was even born. His uncle Jomo Sono is widely regarded as one of the greatest players to wear the Pirates shirt, while his father Julius “KK” Sono is also a club legend.
Despite his short career as a head coach, Mokwena has an impressive CV, including a Betway Premiership title, and other honours.
