Kaizer Chiefs coach Nasreddine Nabi has revealed a couple of inspired substitutions led to his side’s victory over Orlando Pirates in the Nedbank Cup final, in Durban, on Saturday.
Chiefs beat Pirates 2-1 in front of a packed Moses Mabhida Stadium, to claim their first piece of silverware in 10 years.
Chiefs opened the scoring in the 10th minute when Gaston Sirino converted from the spot, but the lead was short-lived as Evidence Makgopa equalised seven minutes later.
The sides remained locked at 1-1, until Yusuf Maart banged in the winner with 10 minutes remaining. However, the introduction of Mduduzi Shabalala and Ashley du Preez made a big difference according to Nabi.
“We felt that when we did our substitutions, we introduced [Mduduzi] Shabalala and Ashley [Du Preez], and it gave us more balance, and when you get balance, it gives you confidence to go forward, and we even scored our second goal,” said Nabi.
"It is true that we went through some difficult moments, especially after Orlando equalised because we felt that we were losing control of the game. They took advantage of that, and at halftime we tried to correct that by repositioning our players better to have better timing in our pressing.”
Despite the cup win, Chiefs have still had a poor season as they are currently ninth on the Betway Premiership log.
With four games remaining in the league, Chiefs will be desperate to secure a top-eight finish.
"We have two games remaining against difficult Polokwane and Sekhukhune, but probably it is now about celebrating, maybe for two days, and on Monday we go back to work very serious and very committed to the next games.
"We need to get into the top eight at the end of the season."
