The foundation for a powerful Orlando Pirates has certainly been built by outgoing coach José Riveiro, even if they do not come away victorious in the Nedbank Cup final on Saturday.
Pirates, however, are favourites to win their second Soweto Derby in the space of a week as the cup final kicks off at 3.30pm at Moses Mabhida Stadium in Durban.
In the Betway Premiership, Pirates should at worst finish second behind Mamelodi Sundowns. At 12 points behind with two games in hand over Sundowns, there’s still a mathematical chance that Pirates can also win the league.
If Pirates win the final on Saturday, it would be the fifth cup title for Riveiro with the Soweto Giants. With the likely second-place finish in the league as well, it would also be the third runner-up finish for Pirates under Riveiro.
With Riveiro leaving Pirates at the end of the season, the tactician was proud to have built a legacy at the Buccaneers.
“This is a club project, not a Riveiro project, I’ve answered this question many, many times,” said Riveiro.
“The club knows what they are doing. Whoever is coming is going to be the right person and will have the support and will find himself in a good platform to continue where we’re going to stop at the end of the season.
“Football is a cycle, and Orlando Pirates is a huge institution; nothing is going to change because Riveiro is in or out.
“The Buccaneers don’t need to be concerned about that because the future is brilliant for the club, and it’s going to be alright.”
