If Kaizer Chiefs were able to pull off an upset and beat Orlando Pirates in the Nedbank Cup final this weekend, it would give its fans something to cherish as it’s been a decade since the club has won any silverware.
For the players though, even if they go on to emerge victorious at Moses Mabhida in Durban on Saturday, it will not make it a good season according to Chiefs defender Inacio Miguel. Kick-off is at 3.30pm.
There’s no hiding from the fact that Chiefs are facing the prospect of another finish outside the top eight in the league.
With four games remaining for Chiefs in the Betway Premiership, they’re ninth in the standings on the same 30-point tally as Chippa United.
If they’re unable to overtake Chippa, who have five games left, it will not be seen in a good light after a 10th-place finish last term.
“We have to be honest with ourselves that it was a bad season,” Miguel was quoted as saying on Sowetan Live.
“I have to be honest with myself that I also had a bad season individually because I had a lot of goals I set for myself but I didn't achieve them, so I have to be honest and understand that if we win the cup on Saturday, it's a big moment that we'll enjoy for sure, we'll be very happy but we won't forget the bad results we had during the season.”
Though the powers of Chiefs have waned since their last league title in the 2014/2015 season, Miguel insisted there are still high expectations.
“This is a big club... it's something else ... it's incomparable with anything else. There's no bigger club in Africa than Chiefs, for sure. This is more than a club, this is a nation.”
