SuperSport United have endured one of their most challenging seasons in the Premier Soccer League. With the threat of relegation has been looming for much of the second half of the Betway Premiership campaign, they now face a tense run-in—but their fate remains in their own hands.
The Pretoria-based club turned to former Bafana Bafana goalkeeper André Arendse to steer them to safety after parting ways with seasoned coach Gavin Hunt earlier in the season.
And as they are about to on a journey to find a way to climb their way off 15th place, here we look at their next three opponents
Polokwane City
Matsatsantsa a Pitori suffered a 1-0 loss the last time the two sides met in the league earlier this year and with only five fixtures remaining in their season, they cannot afford the same result when they meet the Limpopo-based outfit at the New Peter Mokaba Stadium on Saturday (15:00 kick-off).
Matsatsantsa haven’t won a league match since they last beat Kaizer Chiefs (4-1) at the FNB Stadium in February.
Both sides have only managed to collect three points in their last five outings and with the Pretoria-based outfit caught up in unfamiliar relegation territory, every point will be precious.
Chippa United
Chippa United remain locked in a battle to break into the top eight and will travel to the New Peter Mokaba Stadium with that goal in mind. Their first-round meeting with SuperSport United ended in a goalless draw at the Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium in Gqeberha last year.
The Chilli Boys are currently unbeaten in their last four outings, but back-to-back draws have left them needing a full three points—making victory against the Pretoria-based side a top priority.
SuperSport last defeated the Chilli Boys in 2020 with a convincing 3-0 win. Since then, the two sides have played out eight draws in their last eleven encounters, with Chippa claiming two wins in that run.
Stellenbosch FC
Stellenbosch FC have had the upper hand in recent meetings between the two sides, winning two of the last three encounters across all competitions. With both clubs fighting very different battles in their Betway Premiership campaigns, Arendse and his SuperSport United side face a tough task against Steve Barker’s in-form troops at the Danie Craven Stadium.
Stellies handed United a heavy 4-0 defeat in their recent Nedbank Cup quarterfinal clash, and after a 1-1 draw in their league meeting earlier this season, their upcoming showdown promises to carry even more weight for both teams.
