Mamelodi Sundowns head coach Miguel Cardoso believes his team is ready to meet the challenge posed by Egyptian newcomers Pyramids FC in the CAF Champions League final, describing his players as “the strongest warriors” destined for greatness on the African stage.

Cardoso acknowledged the immense step up in competition between the Premier Soccer League (PSL) and the Champions League, stressing the magnitude of the upcoming clash.

“With respect to the Premiership, this is another level we’re going to face. We have a very tough challenge ahead with this Champions League final,” he said.

Despite the scale of the task, Cardoso’s belief in his squad was evident. “

We are also tough people," he said. "And I would say that God gives the strongest fights to His strongest warriors. That’s what we need to be – warriors, but most of all, high-quality football players.”

Following Sundowns’ final Betway Premiership match at Loftus Versfeld on Sunday, Cardoso reflected on the team’s performance and the unique qualities within the current squad. He emphasised the team's fluid style of play and collective intelligence.

“It has nothing to do with being better or worse than before; it’s just what it is. It’s a pleasure to watch this team play,” he said. “The boys are relieved – they play with freedom but also with responsibility.”

“They organise themselves well and play a beautiful game. I was thinking about what it’s like to defend against this team – it’s impossible to deal with such dynamic football when they’re at their peak.”

However, Cardoso was quick to remind everyone that the focus must remain forward-looking.

“We need to understand that our challenges are always ahead.”

Sundowns’ victory in the Betway Premiership was a significant milestone, but the coach urged a balanced celebration.

“We need to celebrate. It was not supposed to be a party, just a celebration – a celebration of love and football, of the culture we see in the stands with our fans,” he said proudly. “South Africa should be proud to have a club like Mamelodi Sundowns.”

The Brazilians are now preparing to return to Loftus Versfeld this Saturday for the first leg of the Champions League final against Pyramids. The decisive return leg is scheduled a week later at the 30 June Stadium in Cairo.

Sundowns' road to the final has been nothing short of epic. They reached the title decider by overcoming 12-time champions Al Ahly in a gripping semi-final. After a 1–1 draw in Cairo, Sundowns advanced on the away goals rule – a result that underscored their tactical discipline and resilience.

This will mark Sundowns’ third appearance in a CAF Champions League final. They finished runners-up in 2001 and lifted the coveted trophy in 2016.

By contrast, Pyramids FC are enjoying their first-ever appearance in the competition’s final. The Egyptian side edged out fellow South Africans Orlando Pirates with a thrilling 3–2 aggregate win in their semi-final encounter, continuing their impressive rise as the tournament’s dark horses.
