Bafana Bafana head coach Hugo Broos has a clear message for Orlando Pirates’ rising star, Mbekezeli Mbokazi: it is time to make the move to Europe.

As the 23-man Bafana squad prepares to face Zimbabwe and Rwanda in the upcoming FIFA World Cup qualifiers, Broos emphasised the importance of pursuing higher-quality competition for the growth of both individual players and the national team.

During the recent squad announcement, Broos highlighted the rapid development of South African football under his guidance, noting that now is the perfect moment for Mbokazi to take the next step in his career.

Despite only establishing himself in senior football as recently as March, the Pirates defender has already made an indelible mark, earning a key role for both his club and the national team.

“If you see the quality and the talent of Mbokazi, I’m very sorry to Pirates, but this guy has to go away next year. He will become better when he plays good competition and at a higher level,” Broos said.

“If he stays here, it will become too easy for him because he’s good. He needs another motivation, another challenge. That makes him better.”

Only 19 years old, Mbokazi has already taken on leadership responsibilities at Pirates, featuring in high-stakes matches including the CAF Champions League semi-final last season. His performances have earned him accolades such as Man of the Match in a tense draw against Nigeria last month.

He is also celebrating his first senior team title, having helped the Sea Robbers secure the prestigious MTN8 Cup, making history as the only club to win the trophy four times.

Broos did not limit his advice to Mbokazi alone, stressing that other players should also seek opportunities abroad to elevate the quality of Bafana Bafana.

“There are other players who can also make the move abroad. For the national team to become even better, we need these players to challenge themselves in Europe,” he urged.

As the qualifiers approach, all eyes will be on young Mbokazi to see if he can continue to build on his burgeoning reputation. Broos’s call for him to head to Europe is a testament to his undeniable talent, and South African football fans will hope he embraces this next exciting chapter in his career.
