Kaizer Chiefs will reignite their continental aspirations as they prepare to host Zesco United in their fourth Group D match of the 2025/26 CAF Confederation Cup at the iconic Moses Mabhida Stadium in Durban on Sunday.

The last time these two teams faced off in Ndola, Zambia, Chiefs emerged victorious with a slender 1-0 win, courtesy of a second-minute strike from Pule Mmodi. This win not only boosted Chiefs’ confidence but also established a crucial momentum as they step up their campaign in the CAF Confederation Cup.

In what can only be described as a test of resilience, Chiefs endured a tricky midweek fixture against Marumo Gallants, edging past them with another narrow 1-0 victory. Despite the performance lacking fluidity, co-coach Cedric Kaze recognised the importance of the result, particularly given the crowded fixture schedule that necessitated careful squad management.

“Sometimes it’s difficult because even when you don’t want to rotate, it becomes a necessity,” Kaze shared, acknowledging the tough decisions made to keep key players fresh. The rotated line-up, however, struggled in the early stages against a determined Gallants side that pressed aggressively.

Yet, through discipline and tactical patience, Chiefs weathered the storm. The second half saw a resurgence in performance, particularly from the substitutes, who helped the side control the game. Kaze expressed his satisfaction with the team’s response, noting, “The boys who came on helped us to put the foot on the ball and to play with more control.”

Now, as attention turns to continental competition, the Chiefs find themselves keenly aware of the stakes. Historically, they have faced Zesco United three times, with the Zambian club holding the upper hand, winning twice to Chiefs’ solitary success. Notably, the Chiefs have struggled against Zambian opponents, recording three losses and a draw in prior CAF encounters, until their recent victory in Ndola.

This matchup at Moses Mabhida Stadium marks a significant occasion, as it represents the Chiefs’ first CAF game at the venue since their loss to Raja Casablanca in 2015. As for supporters, this marks their third venue change in the current CAF Confederation Cup campaign, further underscoring the challenges of staging continental football.

With the domestic momentum at their back and the weight of history on their shoulders, Chiefs are primed for battle against Zesco United. The resilience they exhibited in their recent outings will be crucial as they aim to secure another important win on the continental stage.
