Stellenbosch FC’s 2025/26 season has played out like a novel no one could have predicted — filled with drama, setbacks and few, if any, sparks of brilliance. Now they turn each page with quiet hope, chasing the elusive final chapter where joy finally outweighs struggle.
With the season yet to reach its halfway mark, Steve Barker and his side still hold the pen to their own story. While inconsistent league form has been the source of much frustration, a shift in focus to the CAF Confederation Cup could provide the fresh spark they need to regain momentum.
Stellies return to the continental stage after making history last season, when they came within touching distance of a dream final before bowing out in the semi-finals to Tanzanian Premier League side Simba SC (1-0 aggregate loss).
The competition brings back fond memories for Barker and his players — a reminder of what they are capable of and, perhaps, a timely source of confidence during a challenging phase of their domestic campaign.
Here, we take a closer look at how the Cape Winelands side’s journey in this season’s tournament could unfold and the obstacles standing between them and a step beyond last season’s semi-final exit.
Otoho d’Oyo
The Republic of Congo outfit secured qualification for their third Confed Cup group-stage appearance after a 3-0 aggregate victory over Mozambican side Ferroviario Maputo in the second preliminary round.
The Congolese club has reached this stage twice before but has yet to progress beyond the group phase — a record they’ll be eager to break this time around. Stellies will have the advantage of opening their group campaign at home, an opportunity to set the tone early in front of their supporters.
Singida Black Stars
The Tanzanian Premier League outfit will make their first-ever appearance in the Confed Cup group stages after overcoming Flambeau du Centre of Burundi 4-2 on aggregate in the second preliminary round.
While the Maroons have struggled for consistency domestically, they might benefit from their match rhythm, having already played 12 games this season compared to the Tanzanian side’s three. This could give Stellies a slight edge in sharpness and cohesion.
However, the Black Stars will arrive with confidence, fresh from winning the 2025 Kagame Interclub Cup — a success that could inspire belief in their debut continental campaign.
CR Belouizdad
The Algerian giants make their return to the continent’s secondary competition for the first time since the 2019/20 season. Having featured regularly in the CAF Champions League over the past five years, CR Belouizdad bring a wealth of experience and a strong reputation, making them favourites to advance from the group.
Last season, they faced Orlando Pirates and were beaten 4-2 on aggregate, losing 2-1 in both legs. Stellenbosch are no strangers to high-profile opposition either, having previously faced Egyptian giants Zamalek, and their trip to Algiers will undoubtedly be their sternest test in the group.
Barker’s men will spend much of the early phase on the road, with two of their first three fixtures away from home. Although their domestic form has been patchy, this continental campaign could prove pivotal — either steering them back towards stability or helping them craft a final chapter few would have foreseen.
