Stellenbosch FC’s coach Steve Barker displayed a resolute optimism despite a goalless draw against 15 de Agosto de Akonibe in their CAF Confederation Cup second preliminary round, first leg, tie.
Barker believes his side are well-positioned to advance to the group stages of the tournament after Saturday’s clash at the challenging Estadio de Ebibeyin in Equatorial Guinea. The Winelands side had to deal with challenges of long-distance travel and unfavourable conditions.
“It was not an easy encounter,” remarked Barker, after the match.
The coach acknowledged the adverse weather and poor pitch conditions but noted that his players coped admirably for most of the game.
“We were the better team, but unfortunately, we couldn’t convert one or two of the chances that we created. However, the players have done well to come out of these conditions having not conceded.”
Though the scoreline did not favour Stellenbosch, their defence proved resilient, marking an impressive fourth consecutive clean sheet across all competitions.
Barker emphasised the significance of this achievement, stating, “It’s always important that you don’t concede.
"Keeping clean sheets is key to winning football matches.”
However, he also acknowledged the need for improvement in the offensive department, expressing a desire for better execution and decision-making during crucial moments in the final third.
“We have to be better at that,” he said, stressing the dual importance of maintaining defensive solidity while increasing their attacking output.
Barker remains hopeful ahead of the return leg, scheduled at Athlone Stadium in Cape Town next week.
He stated, “We have to be better at that, but coming away not having conceded under today’s circumstances, and still being in a strong position in the tie, is very important.”
The return leg will be played at Athlone Stadium in Cape Town next week, presenting an opportunity to confirm their entry to the group stages. He maintains a forward-looking perspective but remains aware of the immediate challenges ahead, turning his focus to a mid-week clash against Golden Arrows at Athlone in the Betway Premiership.
“The obvious mindset and preparation turn to Wednesday’s league game,” he remarked, indicating his commitment to not only competing on the continental stage but also maintaining a strong performance in their domestic league.
