Spanish giants Real Madrid have fired head coach Xabi Alonso after he fell out with a number of stars over his tactical choices at the club.

The former Madrid and Liverpool midfielder joined the club in the offseason as Carlo Ancelotti's replacement on the back of an impressive spell as Bayer Leverkusen manager, whom he guided to the German league and cup double against in 2024.

In Alonso’s first season in charge, Madrid currently find themselves second in La Liga, trailing league leaders Barcelona by four points after 19 games in what is proving to be a tight title race for Spain’s biggest clubs.

According to reports, a poor run of form in the Champions League, a rift with star forward Vinicius Jr, as well as Madrid’s 3-2 Supercopa loss to Barcelona on Sunday are thought to have contributed to the club’s decision to end his tenure.

In a statement on Monday evening, Madrid said: "Xabi Alonso will always have the affection and admiration of all Madrid fans because he is a Real Madrid legend and has always represented the values of our club. Real Madrid will always be his home.

"Our club thanks Alonso and his entire technical team for their work and dedication during this time, and wishes them the best of luck in this new stage of their lives."

Prior to taking the Madrid job, Alonso was reportedly high on Liverpool’s shortlist following the departure of Jurgen Klopp two years ago. The Spaniard opted to remain in Germany for one more season, with the hope of becoming Madrid manager following Ancelotti's departure from the club.

In Alonso’s place, Madrid further announced that Alvaro Arbeloa, a former teammate of Alonso at both Liverpool and Madrid, will be taking over as the head coach. The 42-year-old was previously a coach in Real's academy.

According to reports, Manchester United are said to be on "high alert" following the announcement. The English giants are themselves looking for a new manager following the sacking of Ruben Amorim last week. However, with Alonso being a legend at United's fierce rivals Liverpool, it's unlikely he will end up at Old Trafford.
