The Soweto Derby fever reaches fever high pitch with the Nedbank Cup taking centre stage.
Orlando Pirates claimed Soweto bragging rights once again with a thrilling 2-1 comeback victory over arch-rivals Kaizer Chiefs at a sold-out FNB Stadium. Despite a sluggish start, coach Jose Riveiro called the clash an “entertaining encounter,” and it certainly lived up to the billing.
Chiefs came out with intensity and urgency, taking the lead in just the second minute through Glody Lilepo. The Congolese forward’s early strike ignited the home crowd, but Pirates gradually found their rhythm. Evidence Makgopa leveled the score in the 24th minute after a well-placed assist from Mohau Nkota.
At the break, Riveiro made a bold change—bringing on Kabelo Dlamini for Paseka Mako. Dlamini injected pace and energy, even though he missed a golden opportunity shortly after his introduction. Eventually, it was teenage sensation Relebohile Mofokeng who stole the spotlight, combining brilliantly with Deon Hotto to fire home the winner and send the Pirates faithful into celebration.
Looking ahead, the rivalry takes on new life as Kaizer Chiefs and Orlando Pirates are set to meet again—this time in the Nedbank Cup Final in Durban. It will be the first time the final returns to the coastal city since 2006, a game that ended 0-0 with Chiefs winning on penalties.
This historic rivalry dates back to 1971, and Chiefs will be gunning for a record-extending 14th title in South Africa’s premier cup competition. Can Pirates spoil the party, or will Amakhosi add another chapter to their cup legacy?
