Tributes have continued to pour in for the Stormers’ long-serving team manager, Chippie Solomon, who tragically passed away on Saturday following a heart attack.

While the Stormers and the broader Western Province rugby community are still coming to terms with the loss, the European Professional Club Rugby (EPCR) organisation expressed deep sadness at the news of Solomon’s passing.

“Chippie played a key role during the integration of South African clubs into international club rugby,” EPCR said in a statement. “Through his warmth, approachability and natural ability to connect people, he made that transition seamless and built strong, lasting relationships across the game.

“Working with him was always easy, positive and genuinely enjoyable for everyone at EPCR. He leaves behind only the very best memories for all those who had the privilege to know him. He will be deeply missed.”

SA Rugby president, Mark Alexander, also sent his condolences to Solomon’s family, saying his legacy of service and devotion to rugby will never be forgotten.

Former Springbok wing Bryan Habana also paid an emotional tribute, describing Solomon as the “heartbeat” of the Stormers environment.

“Uncle Chips wasn’t just part of the DHL Stormers… he was the heartbeat of it,” Habana said.

“A larger-than-life character in every sense — his presence filled every room, every changeroom, every bus ride. His laughter was infectious, his passion unmatched, and his care for every single person in that environment was something truly special.

“He didn’t just manage a team… he was the glue that held it together. For so many of us, he was more than a team manager — he was a mentor, a confidant, a constant. The guy who checked in when no one else did, who celebrated your highs like they were his own, and who stood firmly by you in your lowest moments.

“The Stormers family has truly lost a giant today. And the silence he leaves behind will be felt deeply.”

Stormers Director of Rugby John Dobson described Solomon as a unique figure whose impact went far beyond his official role.

“This is devastating news for so many of us,” Dobson said. “Chippie was a remarkable man who was so much more than just a team manager.

“He has been synonymous with our team for so long and represented us with pride all over the world. The deep connection he held with players, coaches and staff at the High Performance Centre was incredibly meaningful.”

Dobson also reflected on the team’s recent tour to France, where Solomon’s attention to detail once again stood out.

“We have just come back from a trip to France, which saw Chippie outdo himself, with every detail and arrangement running impeccably,” he added.

“He will be remembered as a true rugby man, but more importantly as someone who was fiercely loyal and who represented his community and family with distinction in all that he did. Chippie was ‘nullis secundis’ — second to none.”

His passing leaves a significant void within the Stormers and the wider rugby community.
