The only thing the Springboks needed was a victory, and that was exactly what veteran flyhalf Handré Pollard set out to deliver in Cape Town on Saturday.

Without seeking accolades as an individual player, Pollard showcased his calm under tremendous pressure, putting in a superb kicking performance both off the tee and from the hand. His efforts propelled the world champions to a much-needed 30–22 victory over the Wallabies.

The result brings the team right back into the tournament as they now prepare for back-to-back Tests against New Zealand in a couple of weeks.

Pollard was named Player of the Match for his contribution but emphasised after the game that the win was all that mattered.

“A lot of guys played really well, and I know they have to select one player, but for me it was only about the win,” he said about his performance.

“It was a tough week after Ellis Park, to be honest and rightfully so. We were disappointed with the result. It was tough balancing the emotions with the tactics for the second Test. Towards the end of the week, we hit that sweet spot.

“We put the game behind us after taking plenty of learnings from it within the group. You’d be surprised. Yes, there are senior guys leading, but there are also a lot of young guys stepping up with leadership and knowledge. It was a collective effort.”

Pollard said they understood the disappointment felt by supporters after last weekend’s clash, and the team was determined to make things right. The focus was on their next job and getting back on the horse.

They did so excellently in trying conditions, and the 15 points Pollard kicked off the tee were instrumental in getting the team back to winning ways. He showed the composure under pressure he’s become known for.

With the next assignment against the All Blacks at Eden Park in Auckland in early September, Pollard has likely cemented his place as the first-choice flyhalf for that crucial clash.

“People care about the Springboks, and that is the most important thing we must remember. They can be disappointed when we lose because they care so much, and they can be very excited and happy when we win. We understand the responsibility on our shoulders and try to get on the winning side as often as possible.

“When people react like that (after Ellis Park), we don’t see it as negative or get angry. It’s part of life, and everyone is entitled to their opinions.”
