New Zealand Rugby has sacked head coach Scott Robertson following a review and reports of a player revolt.

The decision comes just two years before the 2027 Rugby World Cup, with the board deciding that a change was needed to save their campaign in Australia.

Although Robertson won 20 of his 27 matches in charge, an internal review revealed deep dissatisfaction within the squad. Reports suggest that senior players, including star loose forward Ardie Savea, were unhappy with the team’s direction, with some even threatening to walk away from the national team.

NZR Chair David Kirk confirmed the departure, stating that the mid-point of the World Cup cycle was the right time to make a move. "We have taken an extensive look at progress on and off the field," Kirk said. "Both NZR and Scott agree it is in the best interests of the team that he depart."

Robertson, known as "Razor," rose to fame after leading the Crusaders to seven straight Super Rugby titles. However, his time with the All Blacks was unsettled. He lost two key assistant coaches, Leon MacDonald and Jason Holland, due to internal disagreements, and recently admitted his authority felt undermined.

"I am gutted by this outcome," Robertson said in a statement. "Coaching the All Blacks has been the honour of my life, and I care deeply about this team."

The search for a replacement begins immediately, with former Japan coach Jamie Joseph and ex-Australia boss Dave Rennie considered the favourites. The new coach will face a massive challenge in 2026, including a four-test tour of South Africa and Nations Cup matches against France and Ireland.
