The experienced Labeeb Levy will coach Western Province in the upcoming Currie Cup as they look to re-establish themselves amongst the top teams of South Africa’s oldest domestic rugby competition.
Levy, the skills coach of the Stormers, brings a wealth of experience, and he is poised to lead the side into a strong campaign that kicks off next month with a North-South derby against the Bulls in Cape Town on July 26.
More changes see former players Brok Harris and Dewaldt Duvenage stepping in to coach the forwards and backline respectively, as both make the transition from the playing field to the touchline after stellar careers with the Stormers and Western Province.
Stormers fitness guru Riefaat Jappie will join them as the strength and conditioning coach, and Brendan Venter will take on the role of technical consultant.
Director of rugby John Dobson said the WP coaching team has a great blend of seasoned experience and some fresh faces who will bring plenty of energy.
“We often talk about a balance of youth and experience on the field, and I think this coaching group has also got that,” he said.
“You have the likes of Labeeb and Brendan, both established mentors with great rugby minds, alongside Brok and Dewaldt, who are legends on the field taking their first major steps as coaches. Riefaat will provide excellent continuity in that regard.
“Last season was tough, but we successfully brought through talented young players, with eight of them advancing to represent the Stormers.
“This season, we have a fantastic group of hopefuls ready to showcase the exciting brand of rugby that WP is renowned for.”
Levy himself is excited by the opportunity to lead such a dynamic team.
“I have a strong personal relationship with each one of these men,” he said.
“I know that together, we will be able to take this group of players forward to do justice to the blue-and-white hoops of WP.
“This is a fantastic opportunity for coaches and players to prove their mettle, and you can be sure that we will be putting in the hard work to rise to the challenge this season.”
