Following their rousing comeback win over France over the weekend, the Springboks will be looking to keep up the intensity when they play heavy underdogs Italy at the Allianz Stadium in Turin on Saturday. This is according to utility back Damian Willemse.
The Springboks were reduced to 14 men for the second half against France when Lood de Jager was sent off, but still managed to beat the hosts 32-17 at a stunned Stade de France.
It was perhaps an even better performance than their win over France at the same venue in the quarter-final of the Rugby World Cup two years ago.
Italy, though, will fancy their chances after scoring an upset win over Australia themselves last week.
“Italy has really built their team all around,” said Willemse.
“They defend and attack well, and they have great players who can pull strings for them, so it’s going to be a big challenge, especially in the air. Set-piece-wise, they are a good mauling team and can take it up front as well, and their wings can get up high, so they have a good team throughout.
“It’s going to be a super contest and they’ll definitely bring it to us. They are on a high after their win last week and rightfully so. They’ve been playing very good rugby, as we saw in July when they came to SA.”
It will be the third match of South Africa’s November tour, after also beating Japan 61-7 on November 1 in London.
