Pumas coach Felipe Contepomi has recalled ace flyhalf Tomas Albornoz to the squad for the imminent two-match Rugby Championship series against the Springboks.

Albornoz, who enjoyed a brilliant season with Benetton in the United Rugby Championship, dislocated a finger during Argentina’s famous 29-23 victory over New Zealand in Buenos Aires last month. He subsequently missed the Pumas’ two matches in Australia, one of which was lost and the other won in Sydney last week.

The 27-year-old had also been instrumental in Argentina’s victory over the British and Irish Lions before the latter toured Australia. His skill as a playmaker in the URC attracted the attention of French heavyweights Toulon, who have signed him on a lucrative two-year contract.

In the Pumas’ recent matches in Australia, Santiago Carreras took the flyhalf role. He performed admirably, particularly with his meticulous goal-kicking, but Albornoz’s ability to break open defences will likely see him start against the Springboks next week in Durban.

The Pumas were unlucky to lose 28-24 to the Wallabies in Townsville on 6 September but bounced back with a deserved 28-26 victory in Sydney. With all Championship teams sitting on two wins and two losses, Argentina have a strong chance of claiming the tournament for the first time.

After the Durban Test on 27 September, the Pumas will host the Springboks at Twickenham in the Championship finale.

Albornoz’s return sees Nicolas Roger drop out of the squad, while hooker Leonel Oviedo has been called up to replace the injured Ignacio Calles.
