The Springboks will grace the hallowed turf of Eden Park in Auckland this weekend — a place where visiting teams rarely find success.
As they prepare to face the All Blacks in the first of two Rugby Championship Tests, there is one vital element the Boks will be missing beside the field: their thousands of fans, often referred to as the 24th player.
While there may be pockets of green and gold scattered among a sea of black jerseys, the world champions will be without the unwavering, passionate support of their home crowd. The thunderous rendition of the national anthem, Nkosi Sikelel’ iAfrika, that echoed through Johannesburg and Cape Town against the Wallabies, will not be there this time.
Fans come in all shapes and sizes.

That unique energy, so often the fuel when their backs are against the wall, will be sorely missed. They will not be able to draw strength from the familiar noise, the flags, or the raw emotion.

Eden Park is a fortress for New Zealand rugby. It is loud, hostile, and fiercely patriotic. Without the backing of their “24th player”, the Boks must dig deep.
The silence from familiar voices could be deafening. The oohs and aahs after a massive tackle, the cheers when they score or win a scrum - those absences could make every decision feel heavier.
Bokke take the spirit of Africa with them.

South African fans bring the "gees".

There’s something unmistakable about the presence of South African fans at a Springboks game. It’s more than just the sea of green and gold or the booming sound of vuvuzelas ... it’s a raw, infectious energy that turns any stadium into a cauldron of passion.
The All Blacks will still have their haka, and the home crowds will remain proud and loud - but without the green-clad South Africans in the mix, something intangible will be missing. A spark. A challenge. A reminder that rugby is not just a game of skill and tactics, but of spirit. And few bring more spirit than the fans of the Springboks.
Many of these fans will be watching from their armchairs this weekend.

For the Springboks, the roar of the South African crowd is more than just background noise, it’s fuel. It’s what lifts tired legs in the 78th minute and reminds them who they’re playing for when the pressure mounts.
The banners, humourous and full of fun and support, let the team know: We have your back.
Fans of all ages support the Boks.

Whether it’s a test match in Cape Town or an away fixture in Auckland, South African supporters bring with them a kind of thunder that reverberates through the stands and down onto the field.
This says it all.

However, the Springboks know how to thrive in adversity, and they have done it before. Even without their crowd, they understand what it takes to cross the finish line. They will be playing for South Africa and will run onto Eden Park determined to make history by winning there for the first time since 1937.
Funny banter and digs among the fans, keep things light even though tensions run high.

Ultimately, they know that thousands back home will be shouting at their screens, living every moment - every tackle, scrum and lineout - through them as they take on their arch-rivals.
