The Barebones MMA Championship returns this month in what promises to be a “bigger and better” event in its “new home”.
After launching mid-last year, the mixed martial arts promotion, which focuses on building the foundation of the Western Cape MMA scene, has gone from strength to strength as it will roll out its fourth Amateur MMA show on May 17 at the Sunningdale Sports Complex.
For the first three shows, Elite MMA in Melkbosstrand did an excellent job hosting the event that showcases South Africa’s up-and-coming stars.
Now, as the brand starts to spread its wings, the organisers have decided to find a new venue capable of catering to the ever-growing crowds.
“I have decided to move the venue from Elite MMA because the venue was just too small,” says Barebones MMA Championship owner Lyndall Sandenbergh.
“We could have a maximum of 150 spectators in there, but to this point, we have just grown too much and needed a new space.
“Sunningdale Sports Complex will be the new home of Barebones MC,” confirmed Sandenbergh, who started the promotion in memory of her late partner and former gym owner, Mec Crain, who passed away four years ago.
Sandenbergh has already earmarked September and November for the following two events post-BMC 4.
“I am super proud of how the brand has grown. When you start something new, you’re never really sure how it’s going to land with people, whether people are going to support it, especially when your approach is a little bit different. I am a little bit different,” says the vibrant Sandenbergh with a chuckle.
“But on a serious note, the coaches, the athletes, the supporters, and everyone have wholeheartedly supported the events and continue to do so. It’s incredibly encouraging.”
The show will deliver a colossal 22-fight card, which includes four title fights.
The first title fight of the day will be a Youth A Featherweight title fight (under 65.3kg) between Dante Jones and Johnathan Erasmus.
Steve Kassakula and Alex Suzuki will kickstart a series of title fights on the main card later in the day in a Men’s Middleweight title fight (77.2kg-83.9kg).
In the co-main event, Fighterz Inc’s Raqeeb Sonday will take on Perfect Madziviride in a Men’s Featherweight title fight (61.3kg-65.8kg) before Heavyweights (93.1kg-120.2kg) Emmanuel AKU Okafar and Bertie Niemand throw-down for the BMC big boy strap in the main event of the night.
The show is set to start around 2pm in Milnerton, and is expected to run to roughly 10pm.
* Tickets to the show will be available on Quicket. For more details, you can check out the Barebones MMA Championship or MzansiMMA Instagram pages.
