Donovan Ferreira is looking to kickstart his career with the Proteas.

For a batter as highly sought after as Donovan Ferreira, it seems baffling that he’s earned just six T20 International caps for South Africa — and those too, sporadically. Despite showcasing his talents in elite leagues across the world, including the IPL, SA20, and most recently The Hundred, Ferreira’s international career has lacked one crucial ingredient: consistency.
Now 27, the explosive middle-order batter has finally earned a recall to the national T20I setup — this time under the guidance of newly appointed all-format coach Shukri Conrad. Ferreira missed out on the Tri-Series in Zimbabwe and the recent tour of Australia, but his selection for the upcoming series against England may signal a turning point.
Speaking exclusively to Independent Media, Ferreira was candid about the frustrations he's faced with his international journey thus far. “For me as a player, it's been a bit frustrating because I haven't really gotten a run,” he said. “I've gotten one or two games. I mean, I did well in my debut and then I didn’t play the next game. As a player, that is a bit frustrating, but it’s part of life.”
It’s difficult to build rhythm or reflect meaningfully when opportunities come in isolated bursts. “Looking back at it, there’s not much to reflect on because I think I’ve only played four or five games. It’s always been one or two games here, and one game there,” Ferreira explained. “So, it’s not really something that I’ve thought about or reflected on because I don’t think there’s much reflecting to do on that.”
Since Conrad took over as head coach of the Test side two years ago, he’s developed a reputation for offering clarity and structure to his players. Ferreira, despite not having previously worked with Conrad, already appreciates the transparency in their initial exchanges.
“I haven’t had much to do with Shuks. This was the first time I think I’ve ever really had a conversation with him,” Ferreira said. “But him as a coach, he seems open and is playing open cards. He’s a straightforward guy, which is encouraging for me as a person, because I feel like that’s how I am as well.”
Keen to avoid further uncertainty, Ferreira didn’t hesitate to address the elephant in the room. “I did raise the question in terms of what is his plan? Is he going to play me or not? He did indicate to me that I will be possibly playing all the games,” he revealed. “I did raise to him that I haven’t really gotten an opportunity and I’ve never really been spoken to in terms of what the plan is.”
Ferreira is hoping that his inclusion in the squad will be accompanied by a long-overdue sense of belonging and clarity on his role — and that face-to-face discussions will confirm his place in the team’s long-term vision. “It will be nice to meet up with him and have a conversation with him in person — where he sees me fitting in, where I am in the pecking order — just to understand his thought processes,” Ferreira said.
He also acknowledged that the new regime deserves the time and space to implement their ideas. “There’s a new coach, new ideas, fresh coaching staff. You have to give them time and respect that they’re also going to look at things from a different point of view,” he said. “He had to back the players that he thought were in his plans or that he thinks are in his plans against Australia because that was his first big T20I series.”
Ultimately, Ferreira’s frustration hasn’t been about non-selection alone — but rather the lack of communication that came with it. “After the year I’ve had, you feel like it would be nice to get spoken to from the new coaching staff or the coach,” he said.
And what a year it has been. Ferreira has once again underlined his pedigree as a power-hitter, lighting up The Hundred in England. With 169 runs at a staggering strike rate of 245 — including 17 sixes — he’s currently gearing up for today's final of the competition, a stage that has become familiar territory for him in recent years.
His ability with the bat is no longer in question. What remains to be seen is whether he will finally be given the platform to bring that same explosiveness to the Proteas’ green and gold — and keep it.
