The rivalry between South Africa and India is rich in history. India has an upper hand over the Proteas in ODI cricket, having won 20 out 34 contests, while South Africa has only 13 victories in the rivalry.
However, no clash compares to Sunday’s ICC Women’s Cricket World Cup final between the two countries. Independent Newspapers and Ongama Gcwabe go down memory lane, highlighting FIVE top encounters between the two teams.
Visakhapatnam, 2025 World Cup
A thrilling victory for South Africa in Vizag championed by all-rounder Nadine de Klerk. Had South Africa lost this match, they most likely would have been back home by now. It was the turning point of the Proteas World Cup campaign, a true test against the host nation. South Africa held their nerves, winning by three wickets with seven balls remaining.
Bengaluru, 2024 Bilateral Series
To set the tone for what was a dominant multi-format tour for hosts India, Smriti Mandhana opened her account with a century in the first ODI, smashing 12 fours and a six against the Proteas attack. Mandhana’s heroics would see India complete a dominant performance, beating the Proteas by 143 runs, taking a 1-0 lead in the series.
Christchurch, 2022 World Cup
Mignon du Preez led from the front in what was yet another close encounter between the two teams. The right-handed batter finished unbeaten on 52, helping South Africa chase down 274 with a flick through mid-wicket in the very last ball of the match. A three-wicket victory that saw South Africa finish the group stage second on the log behind Australia.
Leicester, 2017 World Cup
A captain’s effort from Dane van Niekerk saw the Proteas register a mammoth 115-run victory over India. The all-rounder smashed 57 with the bat and returned a four-for with her wrist spin. Lizelle Lee’s 92 at the top of the order was invaluable as the Proteas put up 273/9 and bowled India out for 158.
Bengaluru, 2024 Bilateral Series
With India having taken an unassailable 2-0 series lead, one would have thought they would take the foot off the gas. However, Mandhana continued smashing the Proteas bowlers all around the park, scoring 90 in the third ODI, helping India beat the Proteas by six wickets and take the series 3-0.
