The curious case of MI Cape Town in the SA20, it’s either first or last

Go big or go home. Many cricketers live by this motto, but in MI Cape Town’s case, they have taken this philosophy a bit too far in the SA20.

With the group stage of the fourth season coming to a close on Monday, MICT have once more finished in the bottom sixth spot on the log with three wins from 10 games.

How did they fare last season? They were crowned champions.

Season one and two? They finished sixth, of course.

MICT’s Paradox: Despite Star Performers, They Remain Perennial Wooden-Spooners in SA20 Competition

It remains quite puzzling that they have been so consistently poor in the competition as perennial wooden-spooners, with the 2025 edition being the only anomaly.

MICT also have the top run-scorer in the competition, with Ryan Rickelton topping the charts with 337 runs from 10 matches at an average of 42 and a strike rate of 156. The left-hander also has two centuries to his name, with only four being recorded in total this season so far.

They also have two other batsmen in the top-10 for good measure, with Reeza Hendricks (249) and Rassie van der Dussen (247) compiling impressive seasons of their own.

On the bowling front, allrounder Corbin Bosch is fourth in the wicket-taking charts. With 13 wickets, Bosch is just four behind tournament leader Ottneil Baartman.

And these are just the top performers. The MICT squad is littered with international stars like skipper Rashid Khan (Afghanistan), Trent Boult (New Zealand), George Linde, Kieron Pollard (West Indies), and Kagiso Rabada.

While the quality of players at the disposal of MICT is high, it’s perhaps a testament to the quality of the SA20 that they once again finished bottom of the barrel.
