The stage is set for a thrilling showdown as South Africa’s elite squash players convene at the iconic V & A Waterfront in Cape Town for the Growthpoint Senior Squash Nationals next weekend.
Defending champions Alex Commins and Dewald van Niekerk are fired up to defend their titles against a field of formidable competitors from Thursday, August 28, to Saturday, August 30.
Commins and Van Niekerk have established themselves as dominant figures in the sport, their successes over the years marking them as standout players in the national landscape. Yet, despite their impressive track records, the duo is approaching the event with a fierce determination that dispels any notions of complacency.
Van Niekerk, currently ranked 68th in the world, is on the hunt for his fifth consecutive men’s title. The 28-year-old has made it clear that he will not take this competition lightly. “Being the top seed doesn’t stop me from preparing thoroughly,” he asserted, emphasising the importance of this event in his squash calendar. “This is hugely important to me; it’s the most prestigious event in South Africa and the biggest title you can win in the country.”
His main challenger is the second seed, Damian Groenewald of Northerns, who pushed Van Niekerk to the limit in last year's final, stretching the match to four games. Aware that each detail matters, Van Niekerk reveals his intense preparation, focusing on enhancing his mental, physical, tactical, and technical skills. “I have worked on my game in all aspects,” he said. “I am feeling more confident in my abilities.”
On the women’s front, Cape Town's Commins is eager to capture her sixth Growthpoint Nationals title. Although she has stepped back from professional play, where she reached a career-high of 22 in the world rankings, her competitive spirit remains unyielding. Seeded third, Commins is still viewed as the player to beat.
“The Growthpoint Nationals is always the pinnacle of anyone’s squash career,” she said, highlighting the significance of this event. “It's a great honour to be the SA national champion. I will be going for the title again this year.”
Her leading rival this year is top seed Hayley Ward, currently ranked world No. 75. Despite previous tough matches, including a compelling 3-1 encounter in last year’s final, Ward has yet to overcome Commins. Ward will start her campaign against Helena Hudson from Northerns, while Commins is set to face Lara Patrick, also of Northerns, on Thursday.
The nationals promise not only to showcase the finest talents in South African squash but also to foster an atmosphere of fierce competition and sportsmanship.
As the championships unfold at the breathtaking all-glass court at Makers Landing, fans and players alike can expect a riveting display of skill and determination from both senior and the rising Under-15 participants striving for honour and recognition in the sport.
