Gauteng Premier Panyaza Lesufi visited Netcare Alberton Hospital yesterday to show support for five Gauteng Traffic Wardens who were injured during an early morning patrol in Daveyton, Ekurhuleni, on Sunday.

A group of law enforcement wardens were seriously injured in a violent attack at Daveyton Railway Station while attempting to conduct a search operation.

The incident occurred when the wardens approached a group of approximately twelve individuals, who allegedly opened fire using high-calibre firearms, including the notorious AK-47 rifle.

The ambush left two female and three male wardens with critical injuries, requiring immediate medical attention. Authorities have condemned the attack and launched an investigation into the suspects involved.

SAPS has initiated a case of attempted murder.

During his visit to the hospital, Lesufi was briefed on the condition of the wounded wardens, offering them words of encouragement and commending their bravery amidst the danger they faced.

“I appreciate their courage. I appreciate that they took a bullet on behalf of all of us because we do not know where 11-20 people carrying AK-47swould have ended if they were not disturbed by these young men and women. I wish them a speedy recovery. I have asked the team to compile a full report just to check the necessary protocols were followed.”

In a statement, he condemned the incident, “This act of violence demonstrates utter disregard for the rule of law. Our wardens, together with law enforcement officers, serve daily on the frontlines to ensure the safety and security of our communities,” he stated.

“We will not be deterred from doing our work as law enforcement in the province.”

Lesufi also assured the public that steps are being taken to ensure that the attackers are brought to justice, reinforcing the necessity for safety amongst those who serve to uphold the law.

“I commend the wardens for their bravery and commitment under such dangerous circumstances and wish them a speedy recovery. I extend my thoughts and prayers to their families during this difficult time,” said Lesufi.
