MAYORAL Committee Member for Economic Growth James Vos' recent letter in the Cape Times (January 13) correctly and laudably recognised that "golf is worth its weight in gold for Cape Town’s economy".
What Vos sidesteps in his letter, however, are the profoundly negative consequences of a decision to develop the King David Mowbray Golf Club land.
Apart from the economic impact - which is considerable - a site rich in heritage and dating back to 1910 will be lost.
An urban green lung will be lost.
A flood barrier on the banks of the Liesbeek and Black rivers will be lost.
The home of the South African Disabled Golf Association will be lost.
A golf development programme for young players from disadvantaged backgrounds will be lost.
A unique and diverse community of golf enthusiasts from the city bowl, the Western parts of the Cape Flats, and the southern suburbs will be scattered.
The need for urban housing in our great city should never be dismissed. It is urgent. But the complexities in choosing the right site should also not be ignored.
The other uncomfortable truth Vos sidesteps in his letter is that there are much more appropriate pieces of land that can be developed. The economic and environmental value of King David Mowbray, as well as its significance as a place of community and heritage, surely makes it an extraordinary asset to the city that should be protected for generations to come.
The Club has a passionate membership of over 1 500 people. They are looking forward to participating in the public processes ahead.
