Independent Media executive chairman Dr Iqbal Survé has called for a more inclusive world order and a strengthening of the partnership between Africa and China.
Speaking at the opening of the two-day Global South Media and Think Tank Forum in Houghton Hotel in Johannesburg on Thursday, Survé described the partnership between Africa and China as a “beacon of what genuine cooperation can achieve”.
He said the partnership was grounded in mutual respect, shared goals, and a commitment to building a fairer, more inclusive world order.
“It is this spirit of partnership that must guide our collective efforts in reforming global governance to reflect a more equitable and representative system,” Survé stated
According to the businessman, the theme for this year’s forum “Reforming Global Governance: New Roles and Visions for China-Africa Cooperation” was both timely and vital.
“We live in a world undergoing profound transformation – politically, economically, and socially. The traditional centres of power are evolving, and the Global South is emerging not as a passive observer, but as a formidable and cohesive force for change,” he explained.
Survé said the Global South represents the majority of humanity and is home to immense potential, natural wealth, creativity, and resilience.
However, he added that to truly harness the Global South’s strength, there needs to be a continuation to build on the foundations of collaboration, cooperation, and solidarity.
“Together, we can ensure that the Global South is no longer defined by others but defined by ourselves – through our progress, innovation, and unity,” Survé said.
He continued: “Forums like this – where media, scholars, and thought leaders from across the globe come together – are critical. They allow us to exchange ideas, deepen understanding, and forge new pathways toward common progress.”
Survé said the conversations that will begin at the forum will resonate far beyond the walls of the venue and will influence thinking, reporting, and leadership.
“Let us use this platform to reaffirm our shared purpose and strengthen the ties that bind us. Let us move forward together – confident in the knowledge that the future of the world is not decided elsewhere, but here, among us – the nations, thinkers, and storytellers of the Global South.”
Survé said a more balanced, more just, and more humane world can be built, which will be one where every voice counts and every nation thrives.
The forum was co-hosted by Independent Media and its valued partner, Xinhua News Agency, and attended by senior government, media, and academic representatives from several fellow African countries.
