ANC Women’s League (ANCWL) will hold a special National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting to discuss the future of its president, Sisi Tolashe, after she was instructed to resign as both an ANC Member of Parliament and ANCWL president.
The meeting in Boksburg on Saturday is expected to focus on the findings of the ANC Integrity Commission, which found Tolashe guilty of misconduct in public office.
ANC secretary-general Fikile Mbalula is expected to deliver the opening address.
The ANC’s decision follows growing pressure on Tolashe after President Cyril Ramaphosa removed her as Minister of Social Development.
Her dismissal came after allegations that two luxury utility vehicles donated to the ANCWL by Chinese officials were registered in the names of her adult children.
A party source said the ANC had no choice but to act.
“Painful as it is, accountability must apply to everyone,” the source said. “The movement cannot survive if leaders believe positions are shields against consequences.”
Tolashe had previously resisted calls to step down, saying she would only do so if Ramaphosa instructed her directly.
While she was removed from Cabinet, the ANC is now moving to remove her from her remaining positions within the party and government.
On Tuesday, Mbalula confirmed that Tolashe and former police minister Bheki Cele were among five ANC members referred for disciplinary action for allegedly bringing the organisation into disrepute.
“The constitutional disciplinary process will run its ordinary course,” Mbalula said.
Saturday’s meeting is expected to give ANCWL members an opportunity to discuss the developments and the way forward for the organisation.
