The Democratic Alliance (DA) has appointed Advocate Glynnis Breytenbach as its new Chief Whip in the National Assembly.
The party said she brings extensive parliamentary and legal experience and will play a key role in managing the party’s work in Parliament and within the Government of National Unity (GNU).
DA Parliamentary Leader George Michalakis announced the appointment, saying Breytenbach brings 12 years of parliamentary experience as well as decades of experience as a senior state prosecutor.
“I am pleased to announce the appointment of Adv Glynnis Breytenbach as the Democratic Alliance’s new Chief Whip in the National Assembly,” Michalakis said.
He said she will serve as custodian of Parliament’s rules and procedures for the party and will, alongside him, act as the DA’s chief negotiator within the GNU in Parliament.
Michalakis added that Breytenbach has served throughout her parliamentary career as the DA’s spokesperson on justice, and said her experience aligns with the party’s priorities around safety and security.
“Through this, the DA is sending a clear message that safety and security is a top priority for us in Parliament, in line with the Federal Leader, Geordin Hill-Lewis’ vision,” he said.
Breytenbach will also represent the DA on the proposed Impeachment Committee on the Phala Phala matter, after the party submitted the names of five experienced MPs to the Speaker of the National Assembly, Thoko Didiza.
The other members nominated by the DA are Parliamentary Leader George Michalakis, Deputy Chief Whip Bax Nodada, national spokesperson Karabo Khakhau, and MP Nazley Sharif.
He further said Breytenbach will work alongside Nodada in overseeing the party’s parliamentary caucus, which includes 13 National Assembly whips, 87 NA members and 12 NCOP members.
Michalakis expressed confidence in the leadership team, saying they would form a strong and effective unit in Parliament.
“I have no doubt that they will make a formidable team,” he said.
