The South African government has welcomed the announcement of a peace plan between Israel and Hamas, describing it as a crucial step toward ending the war in Gaza and achieving lasting peace in the region.

The Department of International Relations and Cooperation (DIRCO), spokesperson, Chrispin Phiri said the government views the development as a positive breakthrough.

Phiri urged all parties to adhere to the commitments made during negotiations and to pursue a comprehensive political process.

"South Africa urges all parties to commit to the steps agreed upon during negotiations and follow through with a credible and inclusive political process that will ensure an end to the tragic and catastrophic humanitarian situation and prevent further loss of lives," he said.

He further welcomed the release of Israeli hostages and Palestinian political prisoners, while praising the guarantor states for their efforts in facilitating the agreement. He emphasised South Africa's ongoing call for an immediate and lasting ceasefire.

"There must be a just and lasting peace, in keeping with values of shared humanity and respect for international law."

Phiri reaffirmed that South Africa stands ready to share its experience in peacebuilding, transitional justice, and reconciliation to support efforts toward stability in the region.

The announcement coincides with growing anticipation ahead of a major international legal development. The International Court of Justice (ICJ) is set to deliver its Advisory Opinion on Israel's obligations in relation to the UN, international organisations, and third states in Palestine on October 22.

The Court confirmed: "A public sitting will take place during which Judge Iwasawa Yuji, President of the Court, will read out the Advisory Opinion."
