The ANC has urged Police Minister, Senzo Mchunu, to come clean about his alleged involvement in corruption scandals, saying the days of harbouring criminals are over.
ANC secretary-general Fikile Mbalula said they were expecting a full comprehensive report from Mchunu following KZN Police Commissioner Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi‘s claims.
Mbalula said the ANC was on a renewal process and would not tolerate corruption and misconduct in the process.
"We have not met with comrade Senzo in this particular instance. I am fully confident he will engage with the leadership of the ANC and in particular, Luthuli House on the allegations that have been made,” Mbalula said at a media briefing on Monday.
“He owes it to the ANC, he doesn't have to be commanded. The ANC itself has its own processes, integrity commission and all of that. There are officials of the ANC, so he will brief us.”
Mchunu has since dismissed Mkhwanazi’s allegations, accusing him of making wild allegations that should be given an urgent investigation.
“As much as he dismisses, he equally subjects himself to the processes of government. There is only one boss in the government… Any responsible person will defer to the president,” Mbalula said.
Mbalula added that they can only act after President Cyril Ramaphosa meets with Mchunu.
But he said Mkhwanazi's allegations must be probed fully as they border on the national security front and paint the country as “lawless” and a “banana republic”
“We are not a banana republic, we must root out corruption,” he said.
Mchunu will not be subjected to the step-aside rule now because he is not charged with anything.
Meanwhile, Ramaphosa has promised to deal with the allegations and said those involved should account.
