After torrential rain overnight, several roads have been obstructed due to localised flooding, the City of Cape Town reported on Tuesday.

The flooding has resulted in several lanes being closed.

The spokesperson for the City of Cape Town’s Traffic Services, Maxine Bezuidenhout, said motorists should allow for extra travel time.

The following roads were affected by the localised flooding:

  • On the N1 incoming before Koeberg Interchange, the right lane closed
  • On Baden Powell Drive at Monwabisi, the lane in the direction of the N2 is flooded
  • At Govan Mbeki, both carriageways are flooded outside the Fezeka offices in Gugulethu
  • Main road after Dean Street near Westerford high, direction CBD
  • Duinefontein and Govan Mbeki towards Mitchell's Plain
  • 35th and Robert Sobukwe

“Please allow for extra travel time or use alternative routes where possible, until water levels have subsided. Motorists, please ensure that you are visible to others by driving with your headlights on, reducing speed to reduce the risk of aquaplaning, and increasing your following distance,” Bezuidenhout said.

Members of the public are urged to report any obstructions on the roadways or incidents that could affect public safety immediately to the Public Emergency Communication Centre on 021 480 7700.
