The South African Police Service (SAPS) in Gauteng has launched an intensive manhunt for two suspects who gunned down two on-duty police officers in Ivory Park on Friday night.
Police said a Sergeant and a Constable from the Ivory Park police station were conducting crime-prevention patrols in Extension 9 when they were ambushed and fatally shot by unknown attackers.
The suspects fled with two service pistols, an SAPS-issued rifle and two cellphones.
National Police Commissioner General Fannie Masemola has ordered Gauteng Provincial Commissioner Lieutenant General Tommy Mthombeni to deploy maximum resources to track down the killers and recover the stolen firearms.
Mthombeni visited the crime scene on Friday night and has since assembled a specialised investigative team, including experienced detectives and tactical units, to pursue the suspects.
General Masemola condemned the continued killing of police officers, saying these attacks undermine the authority of the state.
“Between 1 April and 30 September 2025, the SAPS sadly lost six police officers in the line of duty,” he said.
“We are doing everything possible to ensure members are operationally ready, equipped and trained. To all our law enforcement officers: don’t die with the resources we have given you. Always be vigilant and act decisively when your life or the lives of the communities we serve are threatened.”
SAPS has urged anyone with information about the suspects to come forward.
