Richmond police officer, woman killed in apparent shooting incident

Two lives were lost in a tragic shooting in Kimberly, including a police officer. Authorities are investigating the incident, which occurred in the early hours of October 26, 2025.

A police officer and a woman have died in a tragic shooting incident in Richmond, Northern Cape, while a third victim is recovering in hospital.

Police spokesperson Colonel Cherelle Ehlers said detectives are investigating cases of murder, attempted murder and an inquest following the fatal events in the early hours of 26 October.

“According to preliminary reports, a male sergeant, 54, stationed at Richmond Visible Policing, was found with a fatal gunshot wound at a residence in Richmond,” said Ehlers.

The body of a 43-year-old woman was discovered in a VW Polo vehicle nearby. A second adult male, who also sustained gunshot wounds, was admitted to hospital and is in a stable condition.

Lieutenant General Koliswa Otola, provincial commissioner of police in the Northern Cape, extended condolences to the family of the deceased officer and his colleagues.

“She has urged SAPS members to make use of the Employee Health and Wellness services when faced with personal challenges,” said Ehlers.

The circumstances surrounding the incident are still under investigation.
